The Story Behind The Lyrics
Real was written as a tribute to many of the great leaders of our time, who have fought oppressive systems and made our planet a better place for everyone. These are individuals who in many cases risked their lives for the betterment of the people. They often endured hardship and harsh criticism, but persevered nonetheless. Real is specifically a tribute to nine heroes that include Mother Theresa, Ralph Nader, Martin Luther King, Howard Zinn, Cesar Chavez, Nelson Mandela, Jimmy Carter, Gandhi, and John F Kennedy. This is a “hall of fame” of greatness. The nine individuals represent both genders, various nationalities, ethnicities and political ideologies, but all had (or have) the common bond of serving their fellow citizens. Real’s theme can also be applied to anyone’s heroes.

Text Version Of Lyrics
Real
The road can be lonely, you know it, working for justice, everyday
With so much corruption, we need an injunction, it’s true
To make a better place, you give your life, in so many ways
You’re real, and I wanna say, this is where you belong, so lead us today
You’re not afraid to be who you want to,
You’re not afraid to say what you feel
Leading the way, do what you have to
Cause you’re the one that makes it real,
You’re the one that makes it real, You’re the one that makes it real
You have stood up for, those with no voices, with such opposition, in everyway
You have resisted while changing the system, thank you
And those, with nothing to pay, we all need a hero, to lead all the way
You’re real, and I wanna say, this is where you belong, so lead us today
